Craigdarroch Castle (Museum)

 

The Craigdarroch Castle was built in 1980 for the Vancouver Island coal tycoon Robert Dunsmuir. This magnificent 4-storey Victorian mansion served as a home for the Dunsmuir family, and later as a military hospital, Victoria College, Victoria Conservatory of music, and is now a museum and a designated National Historic Site. A self-guided tour leads visitors up 87 stairs and through 39 restored rooms complete with stained glass windows, original oak panelling and woodwork, and Victorian era furnishings.
