Liard River Hot Springs (Hot Springs)

The Liard Hot Springs, located at kilometer 765 of the Alaska Highway in Liard River Hot Springs Provincial Park, are the second largest hot springs in Canada. There are two hot spring pools set amongst warm-water swamps and boreal forest: the Alpha pool and the Beta pool. The water temperatures in the pools are hot ranging from 42°C (108°F) in the Beta pool to 52°C (126°F) in the Alpha pool. The two pools are a short hike away from the parking lot on a well maintained boardwalk trail (less than 1 km). The closest is the Alpha pool. It is about 5x20 meters long, has a nice gravel bottom, a wooden deck around it, and underwater benches. Past the Alpha pool is the larger and cooler Beta pool. It is a bit less crowded than the first one and is excellent for extended soaking. The depth of the pool is about 6 meters. The hot spring water has a noticeable sulfur smell and a high concentration of minerals.
The constant warmth coming from such large volumes of water has created a special microclimate. This site is home to a wide range of wildlife and plants. Bears and moose are frequent visitors to the area. Despite very cold winters, the swamp and the two pools never freeze and can be enjoyed even during the winter months. This park is open year round; however access to the Beta pool is subject to annual closures due to slippery boardwalk conditions and high bear activity.
