Museum of Vancouver and H.R.MacMillan Space Centre (Museum)

A distinctive building in Vanier Park topped with a dome in a form of a Haida hat is home to both the Museum of Vancouver and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre.

The Museum of Vancouver is one of the largest civic museums in Canada and has four permanent exhibits focusing on different eras in Vancouver history. The “Gateway to the Pacific” gallery depicts the rise of Vancouver and the clash of diverse immigrant cultures in the early 1900. The “Boom, Bust, and War” exhibition portrays the effect of the market crash of 1929 on the lives of Vancouverites. “The 50s Gallery” is full of paraphernalia from that era, while the ”You Say You Want a Revolution” exhibition is dedicated to the hippie culture of the 1960s and the many ways in which it shaped the city. The Museum also has a large collection of First Nations art and archaeological artefacts and stages rotating exhibitions devoted to different topics.

The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is dedicated to explorations in astronomy and space. Don’t miss a visit to the planetarium where a 360 degree view of the night sky is projected on the domed ceiling. The Virtual Voyages Motion Simulator offers a dramatic virtual reality ride through space. Kids will love the Cosmic Courtyard jam-packed with high-tech interactive displays, video games, and audiovisual presentations. The Observatory, in a separate building, features a ½ metre optical telescope and is open to the public on clear nights on Fridays and Saturdays. A knowledgeable staff member is always nearby to assist you and to answer your questions about astronomy.
