Kokanee Creek Provincial Park

Kokanee Creek Provincial Park is one of the most popular parks in the West Kootenays, a region known for its spectacular natural beauty and a wealth of recreation opportunities. The park is found 20 km east of Nelson, on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake. There are two campgrounds: Sandspit, located on the shore of Kootenay Lake, and Redfish, found just across the road, next to Kokanee Creek. Numerous water-based activities can be enjoyed at this park, including swimming and sunbathing from extensive sandy beaches, as well as canoeing, boating, waterskiing, and windsurfing on the lake. The 100-km long Kootenay Lake contains large kokanee, rainbow, bull, and Dolly Varden trout. Wildlife watching is excellent at this park: there is a large population of birds inhabiting the Kokanee Creek delta, and in late August, kokanee can be seen entering the spawning channel at the creek. In addition to activities available at the park, the surrounding area offers a wide variety of recreation opportunities. The nearby Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park has over 85 km of hiking trails. Visitors can also go on a guided spelunking tour at Cody Caves Provincial Park, relax at the mineral pools at Ainsworth Hot Springs, or explore the tree-lined streets of historic Nelson.
