Wells Gray Provincial Park (Mahood Lake)

 

Wells Gray Provincial Park encompasses over 540,000 hectares of spectacular wilderness and contains snowcapped mountains, alpine meadows, glaciers, numerous lakes, rivers, streams, and several magnificent waterfalls. Boundless recreation opportunities exist at this park: hiking many kilometres of trails, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, and mountain biking are all excellent here. Guided canoeing tours, as well as hiking and horseback riding trips are available through a variety of commercial services in and near the park. The park’s most famous attraction, Helmcken Falls, are approximately three times the height of Niagara Falls. The park has three vehicle-accessible campgrounds: Clearwater / Falls Creek, Pyramid, and Mahood Lake, as well as several wilderness / canoe camping areas on Clearwater, Azure, Murtle, and Mahood Lakes.

Mahood Lake campground is located at the west end of Mahood Lake, away from the main park area, and is accessed by turning off Highway 97 at 100 Mile house and travelling east for 77 kilometres. The campground can also be accessed by turning off Highway 24 and travelling north for 57 kilometres. Mahood Lake campground has 34 large, well-shaded campsites and offers a quiet, relaxing camping experience. Fishing is reputed to be good in Mahood and Canim Lakes. Swimming, boating, canoeing, and kayaking can also be enjoyed on Mahood Lake. Canim River has two spectacular waterfalls located a short distance from the campground.

Location

From Highway 97, turn off at 100 Mile House onto Canim Hendrix Road. Follow this road for approximately 60 km, then turn left onto Mahood Lake Road to reach the park.

From Highway 24, turn off onto Horse Lake Road (located approximately 16 km west of Bridge Lake). Follow this road north for about 5 km, then turn right onto Mahood Lake Road which leads to the park.

Vehicle Accessible Camping Fee: $15.00 per party / night.

BC Senior Rate (Labour Day to June 14 only): $7.50 per senior couple/night.   

Operation Dates

This park is accessible for camping year round, but no services such as water and firewood are provided during the off-season.

Campground dates with full fees and services: May 15 – September 15.
